I hope this doesn’t come as a surprise to you, but doing lots of crunches or sit ups to get toned abs is an exercise in futility.

It’s true!

Let’s get this straight right now: doing hundreds of crunches and sit-ups will definitely strengthen your core and help protect against lower back injury. But they’re not going to help get rid of the belly fat  you need to eliminate to get those sexy visible abs you want. So if you’ve been doing sit-ups like crazy for months, you probably have a rock-hard set of abs, but they’re buried under layers of stomach fat where you (nor anyone else) can’t see them.

So what can you do to get that six pack to come out from hiding? The place to start is with your diet. Fit, nutrition conscious men and women generally eat 4 to 6 small meals a day, about 3 hours apart. The instant impact is to bump up your metabolism throughout the day and that (along with regular work outs, 3 – 4 x a week, that target your whole body) will help your body burn more calories on an ongoing basis.
If you were to take that big dinner meal usually have and divide the exact same amount of food into a number of smaller meals, you would start losing body fat. Eating a huge single meal at any time of day, but especially in the evening, results in your body keeping mostly all of those calories onboard. What your body can’t use right then gets converted to fat. It also creates problems for the overworked pancreas, which tries hard to provide enough insulin to counter the big meal sugar spike.

If you want to know how to get great toned abs …it’s really not that hard to do. Just reduce the amount of calories you consume and spread your meals out. As you drop your percentage of body fat, those abs of steel will become more visible. And the lower your percentage of body fat, the more you (and whoever else you want to show them off to) will be able to see those sexy six pack abs.

    This is some helpful info, thanks. At the moment I’m really focused on getting rock-solid six pack abs. It’s my personal aim at the moment. Do you have any diet recommendations as far as my diet? I’ve been told that egg whites, oatmeal, salmon, blueberries and broccoli are all necessary to incorporate into your diet. Are there any other foods I should consider working into my diet?

    Glad you both found this article helpful. You’re both on the right track with food. The ones you’ve mentioned are excellent for burning fat and should be included in your diet. However, I would eat the entire egg (not just the egg whites) because they’re an excellent source of protein.

    Here are a few other foods I would eat on a six pack abs diet: turkey breasts, lean cuts of steak, kale, non fat yogurt and kidney or lima beans.

    As I point out in my 10 Fat Burning Foods article, you want to eat lean sources of protein, fresh fruits & vegetables and whole grains.
